For stay-at-home moms or SAHMs, trying to figure out what to do might seem pretty easy, but it can actually be a bore. Especially when the children are getting older, and spending more time outside the house, SAHMs may suddenly find themselves having too much time in their hands, besides taking care of the household chores.
One way to become productive and to develop one’s creativity is by engaging in arts and crafts. This hobby allows one to become resourceful in using recyclable materials, imaginative in creating innovative ideas and even enterprising in using one’s creations to make money. Arts and crafts run the gamut of what Martha Stewart does on her show-from cross-stitching, to scrapbooking. One is candle-making.
Candle-making is easy – you just need a wick, mold, cutter and scissors, bottles, cut outs and designs for pasting on the candle, and essential oils to provide that smooth, pleasant smelling fragrance. For beginners who are into candle-making, they can use candle molds to create candles of various shapes and sizes. Depending on the wax you are using, you can create molds whichever way you want – simple containers like bottles or cans can help in creating these molds. Also, depending on how many candles you plan to make, you can melt and use as many wax as you want, and create different geometric forms, animals and abstract figures with your molds. You can use crayons or dye to color your wax – blue, red, purple, green, yellow or orange.
Try to spice up your candles by designing interesting candles holders. Put ribbons on them, dried or pressed flowers or specially cut out papers or glitters, the give these handmade candles the pizzazz to stand out from the rest. It requires patience, care and skill in taking the time to create these detailed designs on the candle.
You can create scented candles. Scented candles are best for gift ideas, room decors or aromatherapy sessions. They are created by heating the wax, and when it reaches the melting point, you pour from essential oils like lavender or lemon into the mixture. It is best to use chemicals that are oil-based rather than water-based – this allows the fragrance oil to mix well with the candle mixture while you are heating it. It is advised to use gel wax rather than paraffin wax when making scented candles, since gel wax holds the smell much longer. Organic candles such as soy candles or beeswax candles are great because of its environment-friendly properties.
